You’re the Boss: The Agency Management Game Where Every Decision Counts
A fast-paced, team-based simulation that helps agency people build commercial awareness, sharper prioritisation and more joined-up thinking.
Running an agency looks simple from the outside: Win great work. Do great work. Make a profit.
But inside the agency, every day is a set of trade-offs. Growth and delivery. Quality and capacity. Income and investment. People, clients, reputation and margin all pulling in different directions.
You’re the Boss gives agency teams a safe, competitive and highly engaging way to experience those decisions for themselves.
Agency teams are full of talented people doing brilliant client work.
But commercial understanding does not always develop naturally. People may understand their clients, campaigns and deadlines, but not always the commercial impact of the decisions being made around them.
What happens when you chase too much new business?
What happens when delivery standards slip?
What happens when capacity tightens, margins get squeezed or your best people burn out?
Agency leaders deal with these questions every day. You’re the Boss lets your team experience them in a way that feels practical, memorable and fun.
A commercial awareness simulation for agency people
You’re the Boss is a competitive, team-based management game for PR, digital and marketing agencies.
Teams run the same virtual agency over a series of fast-moving “quarters”. They make decisions, submit their choices, see the consequences and then adjust their strategy.
Every round forces teams to balance the real pressures of agency life:
Which new business opportunities to chase?
How hard to push growth without damaging delivery?
Where to invest across people, marketing, training and technology?
When to hire?
How to protect quality, reputation and margin?
How to respond when clients wobble, markets shift or capacity tightens?

The game is designed to run as a 3–4 hour in-person session and can scale up to 32 people in8 teams, depending on group size.
How it works in a half day
Participants work in teams and take charge of the same agency profile.
Each round follows a simple rhythm:
Review the agency position Teams look at performance, clients, capacity, reputation and available opportunities.
Make commercial decisions They decide where to invest, which work to chase, how to manage capacity and how to protect performance.
Submit their choices Every decision affects the agency.
See the consequences Results update. Reputation can rise or fall. Clients can be won or lost. Margins can improve or come under pressure.
Adjust the strategy Teams learn, debate, compete and try to improve their position in the next quarter.
Win great work. Do great work. Make a profit.

Ideal for agency away days, rising stars and employee-owned agencies
You’re the Boss works brilliantly for agencies that want a high-energy development session with a clear commercial purpose.
It is especially useful for:
Agency away days where you want an activity that is engaging, useful and memorable
Rising stars and future leaders who are starting to take on more responsibility
New leadership teams who need a shared language around commercial decision-making
Employee-owned agencies where people need to understand what it really means to think and act like owners
Client-facing teams who need to see how scope, quality, capacity and delivery affect agency performance
For EOT agencies, this is a particularly strong fit. If your people are employee owners, they need to understand more than the work. They need to understand the business behind the work.
What your team takes away
People leave with a better understanding of the commercial decisions agency leaders make every day.
The session helps build:
stronger commercial judgement
sharper prioritisation
better understanding of agency trade-offs
more joined-up thinking across client, new business and operations teams
a shared language around margin, capacity, quality and investment
more empathy for the decisions leadership teams have to make
Most importantly, the learning does not feel like a lecture.
It is practical. Competitive. Collaborative. And fun.
You’re the Boss is different because people learn by doing. They make decisions, see the results and experience the pressure of competing priorities.
The game creates the kind of conversations agency leaders want their teams to have — but without the defensiveness that can come with real client, people or margin discussions.
Because the scenario is simulated, people can test ideas, make mistakes, argue for different choices and learn from the consequences without putting real clients, budgets or people at risk.
It’s commercial. It’s collaborative. It’s great fun.

The You’re the Boss simulation was a unique and fantastic way to give our team an insight into the various levers involved in running an agency. Everyone, regardless of seniority, was engaged in the session and took some valuable commercial lessons away, which for an employee-owned business like ours is really important. Richard and Paul did a great job of facilitating the session. Highly recommend!

You’re the Boss is a fantastic agency‑management game that brings people together while teaching real commercial awareness. It’s highly collaborative, great for team building, and gives everyone a safe, enjoyable way to experience the pressures of running an agency. Balancing commercial decisions with team utilisation and wellbeing isn’t always easy, and this exercise offered a fun, non‑threatening environment to explore exactly that.”
